There are many additional sources of advice and guidance available on Health and Safety.  These include books, publications, health and safety consultants and Health and Safety / Fire Safety Inspectors. We have included a number additional links and references on certain pages providing more specific or detailed advice.

Books and Publications

Many books have been written about Health and Safety and most good bookshops and libraries should have a selection. Please remember that many of these books have been written for business, but this in itself does not make them irrelevant to Churches and Places of Worship.

The following publications have been found to be especially useful to Places of Worship, and many of them are freely available or at very little cost.

For detailed guidance on specific regulations, refer to Approved Codes of Practice, which are available through HSE Books.

This accident book complies with the Data Protection Act and can be used to record accidents in Places of Worship.

Asbestos: the hidden killer
This guidance manual is written specifically for Churches and Places of Worship. It includes detailed instructions on how to identify and control asbestos, including essential check-sheets for pre-inspection and during inspection. A guidebook that covers the essentials of Health and Safety in the voluntary sector, including Church fund-raising events.

An introduction to health and safety. Free Publication
This book introduces the most important parts of Health and Safety in circumstances where people are employed. This guide is useful where people are employed in your Place of Worship, for example as a caretaker or to run a cafe or book stall.

Essentials of Health and Safety.
Now in its fourth edition, this popular book outlines the key aspects of Health and Safety.  Although written with business in mind, it is equally useful in Churches and Places of Worship.

Fire Safety Risk Assessment Available as a PDF on ChurchSafety
A series of guidebooks about the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 are available from the
Department for Communities and Local Government.  These are priced publications but can be downloaded for free or ordered off the above Website.  Of particular interest to Churches and Places of Worship are:

Fire Safety in Cathedrals (four leaflets). Free Publication
These leaflets discuss the measures needed to manage and prevent loss due to fire, smoke detection systems and the evacuation of people from Cathedral buildings. Applicable to many other Places of Worship.

A guide to the basic 'five steps' method of Risk Assessment, which is ideal for many Places of Worship.

Guidance on the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR), which applies to Churches and Places of Worship.

Guidance on preparing a Health and Safety Policy document for small firms. This guidance can be applied to Churches and Places of Worship.

For advice about Fire Safety, please contact your local Fire Brigade (using the non-emergency number found in the telephone directory).

If you are part of a larger organisation or denomination, you should be able to contact someone in a central office for advice on policies and procedures.

The Health and Safety Executive publish many useful leaflets about Health and Safety. Much of the information is available free of charge, but note that it is typically written for business.
